Voices of Students on Engagement: A Report on the 2006 High School Survey of Student Engagement
Yazzie-Mintz, Ethan
Center for Evaluation and Education Policy, Indiana University
The goal of the High School Survey of Student Engagement (HSSSE) is to document, describe, and monitor student engagement in secondary schools nationally. HSSSE is a powerful tool in the assessment arena that can complement performance tests and stimulate discussions on teaching and learning. This overview report highlights findings from across the entire pool of HSSSE respondents in 2006--81,499 students in 110 schools within 26 different states--providing a window into students' thinking within high schools of many varieties: large, small, and midsize; East, West, and Midwest; urban, suburban, and rural. The report first provides a profile of HSSSE 2006 schools and respondents, then details selected findings from HSSSE 2006, and concludes with strategies schools have employed to strengthen student engagement. Among the findings were that three-quarters of students surveyed said they were bored in class because the "material wasn't interesting," and 39% state that "Material wasn't relevant to me." Students said activities in which they learn with and from peers are the most exciting and engaging, including classroom discussions and debates. (Contains 7 figures, 2 tables, and 4 endnotes.)
